Impossible

As I sit and look out at the lake here at Christ the King Retreat Center in Buffalo, I am watching cars, trucks and snowmobiles zoom across the lake, moving to and from their ice houses. Not being originally from Minnesota, the first time I saw this I was stunned and thought "this is impossible!".People driving cars on lakes….people "walking" on water.

Even in my lifetime, there are lots of things we once thought impossible that are now routine. As a kid watching Get Smart, I remember thinking it would never be possible to have a cordless phone, much less one in a shoe….now, think cell phones. Prepare dinner in less than 5 minutes? Think microwaves…the list could go on but would only make for what my kids would describe as "fogy moments."

Then there are the things that seem truly impossible….those things that when you look at them or experience them you are drawn into the "impossibility" of a Source greater than we can imagine, greater than we can explain with our rational minds, beyond our wildest dreams. Things like an unfolding orchid, intricate and multicolored….a hummingbird searching wildly for red and finding nourishment…geese flying in formation, changing and shifting to give strength and rest to the other…a baby’s eyelashes…..sundogs on a subzero day painting the hope of color across the sky.

Everyday we are invited into the impossible. We are surrounded by the gifts of imagination of countless inventors and artists who have made our lives easier and more beautiful. Everyday we are invited into the impossible. We are also surrounded by the work of the Great Artist who unfolds Mystery in our midst. It really is only up to us to have the time to see with sacred eyes.
